Topic outline

  • Hydrology: Peak Flow for Ungaged Sites

    Credits: 3 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

An understanding of hydrology is important for many civil engineering, environmental engineering, and geotechnical related projects. This course is about the use of USGS regional regression equations, the SCS graphical peak discharge method, the Rational Method, the index-flood method, and peak discharge envelope calculations for ungaged sites.

    Topics:

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
    • Be able to use USGS regional regression equations to estimate rural peak discharges.
    • Be able to make use of urbanization factors to estimate urban peak discharge from a rural peak discharge value.
    • Be able to obtain a value for SCS runoff curve number, CN, if given adequate information about a watershed.
    • Be able to use the SCS graphical peak discharge method to estimate the runoff depth from a specified precipitation depth and adequate watershed information.
    • Be able to use the SCS graphical peak discharge method to estimate the peak discharge due to a specified precipitation depth and adequate watershed information.
    • Be able to use the Rational method to estimate the peak discharge from a small watershed.
    • Be able to obtain a value for the Rational Method runoff coefficient, C, if given adequate information about a watershed.
    • Be familiar with the index flood method of estimating peak discharge at an ungaged site.
    • Be able to calculate the maximum flood flow envelope for a specified drainage area at a specified U.S. location.
