Topic outline

  • Underwater Sampling of Soils

    Credits: 2 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course is intended to provide guidance for obtaining soil samples in the near shore environment, such as harbors, rivers, coastal plains, back swamps, and wetlands where the depth of water varies from 0 to 45 m (0 to 150 ft), and is generally less than 20 m (65 ft). Sampling in deep water is not addressed within this course.

This guidance is intended to support typical projects such as marine construction projects, dredging of channels and harbors, construction of levees and dams, and reclamation of wetlands. Therefore, the information concentrates on common, commercially available sampling equipment and methods. However, guidance for obtaining chemical samples, which is typically done in conjunction with soil sampling, is beyond the scope of this manual.

    Topics:

    • Introduction to underwater soil sampling
    • Types of underwater sediment
    • Types of underwater samplers
    • Planning an underwater site investigation
    • Work platforms for underwater sampling
    • Handling and storage of samples
    • Special considerations
