Topic outline

  • Surveying Principles: Horizontal / Vertical Curves

    Credits: 3 PDH

    Course Description:

This course provides a thorough knowledge of the properties and behavior of horizontal and vertical curves used in highway work, mainly in the use of laying out the alignment of a proposed roadway.

The center alignment of a road consists of a series of straight lines interconnected by curves that are used to change the alignment, direction, or slope of the road. Those curves that change the alignment or direction are known as horizontal curves, and those that change the slope are vertical curves.

    Topics:

    • Types and Elements of Horizontal and Vertical Curves
    • Degree of Curvature (Arc and Chord definitions)
    • Curve Formulas
    • Tangent / Chord Distance
    • Length of Curve
    • Middle Ordinate, External Distance
    • Deflection Angles and Chords
    • Solving and Laying Out a Simple Curve
    • Inputting Field Notes
    • Vertical Curve Grades, Gradients
    • Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Curves
    • Checking Computations by Plotting
    • Using a Plan and Profile Worksheet
    • Field Stakeout of Vertical Curves
