  • Engineering of Unique Structures: The Atomium in Brussels

    PDH Course Description:

    This course explores the engineering principles, challenges, and innovations associated with the design and construction of the Atomium, a globally recognized landmark from the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (Expo 58). Conceived as a giant unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, the Atomium is both an architectural statement and a structural engineering case study. 

    This course delves into the structural system, load paths, materials, joints, and unique geometries, alongside a detailed evaluation of the structure’s design flaws and the engineering consequences over time. Emphasis is placed on the intersection of architecture and structural mechanics, including retrofitting interventions and long-term maintenance strategies.

    By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 
    • Explain the conceptual and structural design of the Atomium and its historical context. 
    • Analyze the mechanical behavior of spherical nodes and cylindrical connecting tubes under complex loading. 
    • Identify critical design flaws in the original structure and their implications. 
    • Evaluate the impact of materials, welds, and cladding on long-term performance. 
    • Describe the strategies employed in retrofitting and preserving the Atomium as a structural and cultural artifact.
