  • Guide to Hardscape Engineering Principles

    Credits: 4 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This comprehensive course explores the engineering principles governing the design, construction, and maintenance of hardscape features in residential, commercial, and infrastructure settings. It emphasizes structural design, soil interaction, drainage integration, load management, sustainability, and material performance across a variety of hardscape applications including pavements, retaining walls, plazas, outdoor steps, driveways, and permeable surfaces. The course bridges civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering domains to equip professionals with a multidisciplinary approach to safe, code-compliant, and sustainable hardscape development.

    Topics:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
    • Apply structural and geotechnical design criteria to hardscape systems.
    • Analyze soil-structure interaction for retaining and freestanding wall applications.
    • Design hardscape elements with integrated surface and subsurface drainage.
    • Select appropriate hardscape materials based on loading, durability, and environmental exposure.
    • Evaluate load distribution and bearing capacity for paved surfaces and subgrade.
    • Interpret and apply local codes, standards, and best practices in hardscape engineering.
    • Utilize grading and slope stabilization strategies to enhance hardscape stability
