    This course examines the recent rise in pedestrian fatalities across the United States, with particular focus on engineering factors that contribute to this trend and the solutions available to mitigate it. The course explores roadway design, vehicle technology, traffic operations, and urban planning approaches, along with data-driven insights into why pedestrian deaths have increased in the past two decades despite overall advancements in vehicle safety. Practical engineering countermeasures, design innovations, and future strategies are analyzed to provide transportation engineers with the knowledge to design safer roadways, intersections, and multimodal networks.

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
