  • Vapor Barriers and Moisture Control in Building Enclosures: Principles and Practices

    PDH Course Description:

    This course provides a comprehensive study of vapor barriers—also referred to as vapor retarders—and their role in managing moisture migration within building envelopes. The course explains the physics of vapor diffusion, the classification of vapor control layers, and the engineering principles behind proper barrier placement. Emphasis is placed on regional climate differences, detailing how vapor barriers must be installed differently in cold, mixed, and humid regions to prevent condensation, rot, and structural degradation. Case studies of failed and successful installations are discussed to highlight best practices in wall assemblies, roofing systems, slabs, and below-grade foundations. The course further explores compatibility between vapor barriers, insulation systems, and air barriers, providing engineers with the analytical framework needed to specify appropriate moisture control systems in both new construction and retrofit applications.
