Concrete Foundations, Shotcrete and Specialty Placements
Credits: 5 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Concrete is extensively used in highway construction for... bridges, tunnels, culverts, and other structures. For these specialized applications, specific material selections and construction procedures are required to ensure long-term performance.
This course covers specialty concrete applications including shotcrete, driven piles, drilled shafts, and protective coatings. These applications require different materials, procedures, and verification methods than typical concrete pavements or deck construction. The course will look at what makes each application unique, how to specify materials, and how to verify quality in the field. This course draws from the Federal Lands Highway Field Materials Manual and is part of a series on highway materials acceptance and testing.Topics:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand shotcrete materials, proportioning, and placement procedures
- Specify and verify driven piles (H-piles, concrete-filled pipe, precast concrete, timber, sheet piles)
- Understand drilled shaft construction, casing, mineral slurry, and integrity testing
- Recognize when protective coatings (painting) are required and verify application
- Accept or reject concrete foundations based on field observations and testing
- Know the documentation and communication practices that strengthen professional defensibility and prevent disputes before they form
