Coatings are essential for the protection of surfaces of metal structures or machines exposed to the atmosphere or to corrosive vapors or liquids. This course describes the various types of coatings, their fundamental chemistry, and in which situations they should be used. Any engineer involved in the production, installation, or maintenance of metal structures or machines needs a basic understanding of the science and terminology of coating .Topics:
- Coatings and coating facilitators currently used in practice, such as paints, resins, epoxies, galvanization, anodizing , film-forming mechanisms, binders, drying oils, driers, pigments, solvents, zinc-rich coatings, powder coatings, and thermal-spray coatings
- Advantages and disadvantages of each class of coatings Chemical basis for coating technology
- Selection of the most appropriate coating for a particular application
