Engineering of Unique Structures: Lakhta Center
Credits: 5 PDH
PDH Course Description:
This professional development course examines the complete engineering and construction process of the Lakhta Center, a 462-meter tall, mixed-use supertall skyscraper located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is a multidisciplinary case study of advanced engineering solutions employed under extreme conditions—artic climate, poor soils, and complex geometries. The course details structural design methodology, wind and seismic performance, foundation engineering, construction logistics, material innovations, sustainability, and post-occupancy performance. Students will gain insight into the coordinated use of BIM, finite element analysis, and high-performance materials that allowed this unprecedented structure to be realized. This course is intended for licensed engineers and technical professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge in complex, high-rise structural engineering and construction.Topics:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:- describe the structural design principles and geometric form of the Lakhta Center.
- analyze the foundation engineering methods used on challenging soil conditions.
- evaluate wind and seismic design considerations for supertall buildings.
- examine the role of high-performance materials and façade systems.
- understand the construction staging, logistics, and extreme climate adaptations.
- assess the implementation of BIM, performance monitoring, and smart building systems.
- apply lessons learned from the Lakhta Center to future high-rise or complex projects.
