Topic outline

  • HVAC - Advanced Air Distribution Design for Large Buildings

    Credits: 3 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course explores the advanced principles, strategies, and system configurations involved in designing air distribution systems for large-scale buildings, including commercial, institutional, and high-rise structures. Emphasis is placed on balancing thermal comfort, energy efficiency, ventilation effectiveness, noise control, and architectural integration.

Engineers will examine the performance criteria and technical constraints that inform ductwork layout, terminal unit selection, diffuser placement, and zone control strategies. Both conventional and modern distribution approaches, including variable air volume (VAV), underfloor air distribution (UFAD), and displacement ventilation systems, will be examined in detail.

    Topics:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the engineering principles guiding air distribution system performance in large-scale environments.
    • Analyze airflow balancing, duct design, and diffuser configurations for various space types and ceiling layouts.
    • Evaluate the merits and limitations of common air distribution strategies (e.g., overhead, underfloor, displacement, hybrid systems).
    • Design zoning systems that address load variability, occupancy patterns, and indoor air quality requirements.
    • Identify design parameters influencing system pressure, static loss, acoustic control, and energy usage.
    • Explore control strategies for maintaining occupant comfort while optimizing system efficiency.
