  • Modern Materials: Basics of Cryogenic Material Science

    PDH Course Description:

    This course introduces licensed professional engineers to the foundational principles and modern engineering applications of cryogenic material science. It explores the behavior of engineering materials under extremely low temperatures, covering both the theoretical and practical implications of cryogenic environments. 

    Emphasis is placed on the physical, thermal, mechanical, and metallurgical properties of materials at cryogenic temperatures, design considerations for cryogenic systems, and material selection criteria. The course addresses a wide array of engineering sectors, including aerospace, energy, and industrial gas systems, while ensuring full compliance with professional development hour (PDH) standards and CE licensure requirements.

    Topics:

    Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

    • Understand the definition and scope of cryogenic temperatures and cryogenic environments.
    • Explain the thermodynamic behavior and phase transitions of materials at cryogenic temperatures.
    • Evaluate changes in mechanical and physical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites under cryogenic conditions.
    • Analyze common failure modes and fatigue behavior of materials in low-temperature systems.
    • Apply knowledge of cryogenic material science to engineering design problems involving liquefied gases, storage systems, and transportation systems.
    • Select appropriate testing methods and materials for cryogenic service.
