    Connecticut PE Continuing Education Requirements

Connecticut currently does not impose a general continuing-education or PDH requirement for renewal of an individual Professional Engineer license.

    Quick answer for Connecticut PEs

No PDH or continuing-education hours are currently required for individual Connecticut PE renewal. Licenses renew annually and expire January 31. Engineers licensed in another jurisdiction must still satisfy that jurisdiction's education requirements.

0 PDH Required for CT PE renewal
    Annual Individual license cycle
    January 31 Individual license expiration
    Firm Separate registration required

    No general PE continuing-education mandate

    Item Current Connecticut rule
Required PDH Connecticut's current PE statutes and renewal instructions do not require a general PDH or continuing-education total for individual license renewal.
Ethics hours No separate ethics-course minimum applies because there is no general Connecticut PE continuing-education requirement.
Course/provider approval The PE renewal rules do not establish a provider-approval or course-approval process for mandatory PE education.
Online-course rules No PE renewal rules impose testing, timing, monitoring, or live-attendance requirements on voluntary education.
Carryover No PE carryover provision applies because Connecticut imposes no mandatory PE hour total.
Education records No PE-specific CE certificate-retention or audit period is prescribed for license renewal. Voluntary records may still serve other professional purposes.
Renewal cycle Individual PE licenses expire annually on January 31 and must be renewed through the Department of Consumer Protection.
Avoid outdated proposals: Earlier Connecticut bills and testimony proposed mandatory PE continuing education. Those proposals should not be presented as the current renewal requirement; use the current statutes and DCP instructions.

    Voluntary education remains professionally useful

The absence of a renewal-hour quota does not eliminate an engineer's responsibility to undertake assignments only when qualified by education or experience, act competently, and protect public health, safety, and welfare.

    Useful voluntary subjects

    • Connecticut engineering laws and regulations
    • Professional ethics and responsible charge
    • Current building and fire-safety codes
    • Flood, coastal, wind, and climate resilience
    • Infrastructure condition and risk management
    • Technical developments within the field of practice
    • Failure prevention and lessons learned
    • Public health, safety, and welfare

    Why retain voluntary records?

    • Document maintenance of professional competence
    • Meet employer or client qualification expectations
    • Support credit in another jurisdiction when eligible
    • Track codes and standards studied
    • Maintain an NCEES CPC record when useful
    • Prepare for a future regulatory change
Accurate course description: Online-PDH courses may be taken voluntarily or applied to another jurisdiction when eligible, but they should not be described as required for Connecticut PE renewal.

Connecticut's zero-PDH rule does not waive another board's requirements

A Connecticut PE holding licenses in other jurisdictions must independently satisfy each board's required total, subject minimums, provider conditions, delivery restrictions, and recordkeeping rules.

A course taken voluntarily may qualify elsewhere, but acceptance and credit value are controlled by the receiving board. Annual Connecticut renewal is not evidence that another state's CPC requirement has been met.

Renew annually even though no CE is reported

    Individual licenses

Every Connecticut PE license expires January 31 each year. Complete the online renewal and required payment before expiration to maintain active authority to practice.

    Engineering firms

A business practicing or offering professional engineering in Connecticut must obtain and annually renew the appropriate professional engineering firm registration. The firm's registration is separate from each engineer's individual license.

    Reinstatement

An expired individual license may be eligible for the Department's online reinstatement process. Firms expired for less than three years may reinstate; after three years, a firm must submit a new registration application.

    Retiree status

Retiree status is available to eligible individual licensees through a separate application. A licensee wishing to return to active practice must use the Department's restoration procedure.
