    Course Eligibility

    Choose purposeful education relevant to engineering practice

    A qualifying course or activity should have a clear purpose and objective that maintains, improves, or expands skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee’s field of practice.

    Typical qualifying activities

    • Engineering courses and seminars
    • In-house professional programs or training
    • Technical, management, or ethics education
    • Technical-society presentations that are a substantive part of a meeting
    • Qualifying remote training with verified attendance
    • First-time teaching of an engineering course
    • Repeat teaching after substantial course updates

    Before claiming credit

    • Confirm relevance to the engineer’s field of practice
    • Identify a clear educational objective
    • Exclude meals and noninstructional time
    • Verify the provider’s stated contact hours
    • Obtain evidence of attendance or completion
    • Record the activity promptly in the PDH log
    One PDH: A contact hour is 50 minutes of instruction with a permissible 10-minute break. Credit is reported to the nearest half hour, no activity under 30 minutes qualifies, and PDH cannot exceed actual contact clock hours.
    No preapproval: Maine’s Board does not approve courses in advance. The professional engineer is responsible for selecting relevant activities and proving their content and completion if audited.

    Remote Education

    Verified remote training can qualify

    Maine recognizes remote training when attendance is verified and the program material satisfies the same professional-development standards as an in-person activity. The Board’s current guidance does not impose a separate numerical cap on qualifying remote hours.

    A structured online course should provide relevant instructional material, a defined completion process, and a certificate or equivalent record. Informal browsing or undocumented personal study is much harder to support during an audit.

    Waivers and First Renewal

    First-time renewals have no PDH requirement

    First Maine renewal

    A licensee renewing a Maine professional-engineer license for the first time is fully exempt from the PDH requirement for that renewal.

    Active-duty military

    Board guidance identifies qualifying active-duty military licensees as exempt from the PDH requirement and audit process.

    Hardship or disability

    A licensee may request a waiver of all or part of the requirement for an extenuating situation, hardship, or disability. Submit a written request with appropriate documentation before renewal.

    Request timing matters

    The Board cautions that waiver requests submitted only after an audit are unlikely to be approved. Do not wait until the licensure period has ended or an audit notice arrives.

    Reporting and Audit

    Maintain the activity log and supporting proof for three years

    Licensees attest to completing the PDH requirement during renewal and must preserve a PDH log with certificates, receipts, or other supporting evidence of attendance for three years. Activities may be tracked using Maine’s PDH Activity Log or the NCEES CPC Tracking system.

    The Board conducts audits after renewal. Audit percentages may vary according to renewal timing, and very late renewals may be audited before renewal. Failure to respond, complete the requirement, maintain records, or keep contact information current may lead to sanctions.

    Carryover requires the earlier file: If a PE claims PDH carried from the previous licensure period, complete documentation from that earlier period must be available to establish the excess credit.
