Design of Reinforced Concrete Ductile Coupled Shear Wall System
Credits: 3 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Reinforced concrete ductile coupled shear wall systems provide an efficient seismic force-resisting solution for multistory buildings by combining special structural wall piers with ductile coupling beams. Under earthquake loading, the coupling beams transfer shear forces between adjacent wall piers, generating a tension-compression couple that resists a significant portion of the overturning moment while providing additional opportunities for seismic energy dissipation.
This practical 3-PDH course explains the structural behavior, analysis, design, and detailing of reinforced concrete ductile coupled shear wall systems in accordance with ACI 318-19 and ASCE/SEI 7-22. Particular emphasis is placed on the geometric and detailing requirements that distinguish ductile coupled walls from conventional coupled and isolated structural wall systems.
Participants will examine the role of coupling-beam aspect ratio, wall aspect ratio, degree of coupling, and reinforcement detailing in achieving the intended ductile behavior. The course discusses the ASCE/SEI 7-22 design coefficients assigned to this system, including the response modification coefficient, overstrength factor, and deflection amplification factor. It also explains the FEMA P695 studies used to evaluate system performance and validate the applicable seismic response parameters.
The course reviews the principal failure modes associated with ductile coupled wall systems, including flexural, shear, and axial failure mechanisms. Important ACI 318-19 provisions addressing wall shear amplification, boundary-element detailing, wall reinforcement, coupling-beam geometry, and reinforcement development are also discussed.
A detailed design example of a 22-story reinforced concrete residential building demonstrates the complete design process. The example addresses system qualification, structural configuration, seismic design criteria, load combinations, torsional irregularity, accidental torsion, redundancy, Equivalent Lateral Force analysis, Modal Response Spectrum Analysis, cracked-section properties, story drift, structural wall design, boundary elements, and coupling-beam design and detailing.
By completing this course, participants will be better prepared to select, analyze, design, evaluate, and detail reinforced concrete ductile coupled shear wall systems and apply the relevant seismic provisions with sound engineering judgment.
