Precast Concrete Structures: Behavior, Systems, and Connections
Credits: 3 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Precast concrete structures provide significant advantages in construction speed, quality control, and architectural flexibility; however, their structural performance depends heavily on proper understanding of load transfer mechanisms, connection behavior, and system stability. Unlike cast-in-place structures, structural continuity in precast systems must be intentionally developed through the design and detailing of joints between individual components.
This course provides practicing engineers with a practical understanding of how precast concrete structures behave as complete structural systems. It examines commonly used precast building systems, including skeletal frames, braced systems, bearing wall systems, and slab-wall structures, with emphasis on how vertical and horizontal loads are transferred through structural components and connections.
The course explains the development of structural models, load paths, load distribution mechanisms, and stability considerations required for evaluating precast structures. It also addresses the behavior of structural joints, shear walls, torsional effects, structural integrity, and progressive collapse considerations in precast concrete buildings.
By completing this course, participants will be better prepared to evaluate precast structural systems, identify critical load-transfer mechanisms, review structural stability requirements, and make informed engineering decisions related to analysis, design, and detailing of precast concrete structures.
Topics:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the primary differences between precast and cast-in-place concrete structural systems and evaluate the role of structural continuity in precast construction.
- Evaluate commonly used precast concrete building systems, including skeletal frames, braced systems, bearing wall systems, and slab-wall structures.
- Interpret vertical and horizontal load paths in precast structures and assess how loads are transferred through components, joints, and foundations.
- Apply fundamental structural modeling concepts for analyzing precast frame and wall systems subjected to gravity and lateral loads.
- Review the behavior and importance of precast connections, including their influence on stability, strength, ductility, and structural integrity.
- Compare different precast structural systems and select appropriate systems based on structural requirements and building applications.
- Evaluate stability considerations, torsional effects, shear wall behavior, and progressive collapse resistance in precast concrete structures.
- Interpret engineering analysis concepts used for assessing precast structural performance, including load distribution and internal force evaluation.
