  • Basic Principles of Groundwater Recharging

    Credits: 1 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course covers the basic principles of groundwater recharge. Groundwater recharge is one of the phases in the management process of a groundwater basin.

In some areas, long-term withdrawal exceeds long-term recharge, and water is being “mined.” Without proper management to obtain a sustained yield, artificial recharge becomes a mere stopgap measure. It may be possible to manage a groundwater reservoir like a surface reservoir so that water is placed in storage in periods of excess and withdrawn in periods of shortage.

Natural recharge may vary from practically none to nearly all of the runoff from a drainage area. When water is available, artificial recharge may be used to supplement naturally recharged amounts.

    Topics:

    • Basic principles of groundwater recharge
    • Water rights and legal aspects
    • Hydrogeological aspects
    • Measures for ground water recharge
    • Quality of water for recharge
    • Benefits of recharge
