  • Steel Bridge Design -Structural Analysis

    Credits: 6 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

The course on structural analysis from Chapter 8 of the FHWA Steel Bridge Design Handbook provides an overview of the different methods and tools used for analyzing steel bridge structures. It begins with an introduction to the types of loads that are typically encountered by bridge structures, such as dead loads, live loads, and environmental loads. The chapter then discusses the different types of analysis methods that can be used to analyze a bridge structure, including approximate methods, such as the moment distribution method, and more advanced methods, such as finite element analysis.

The course also covers different types of bridge systems and the associated analysis methods, including simple span bridges, continuous span bridges, and cable-stayed bridges. Additionally, the chapter provides guidance on selecting appropriate load models and combinations for different types of bridges, and discusses the importance of considering dynamic effects in bridge analysis.

The use of software for structural analysis is also covered, including a discussion of commonly used software packages and their capabilities. Finally, the chapter provides guidance on interpreting the results of a structural analysis and using the results to make design decisions. Overall, the course serves as a comprehensive guide for engineers involved in the analysis and design of steel bridges.
