Topic outline

  • Structural Deformation Surveying Principles and Practices

    Credits: 4 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of structural deformation surveying, integrating both foundational theory and modern practical techniques. Designed for civil engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical professionals, and land surveyors, the course details precise methodologies for monitoring and quantifying structural movements in bridges, dams, buildings, retaining walls, tunnels, and other critical infrastructure. Emphasis is placed on instrument selection, survey design, measurement techniques, data processing, accuracy assessment, and the interpretation of time-dependent structural behavior.

Regulatory and safety considerations, along with integration into structural health monitoring systems, are also discussed. Upon completion, participants will be equipped with a robust knowledge base for planning and executing effective deformation surveys in a variety of real-world contexts.

    Onjectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the principles of structural deformation and its engineering significance
    • Design and implement geodetic and geotechnical survey schemes for deformation monitoring
    • Apply and compare various measurement technologies, including total stations, GNSS, laser scanning, and tiltmeters
    • Analyze and interpret deformation data using statistical and graphical methods
    • Evaluate measurement precision, accuracy, error sources, and reliability metrics
    • Integrate deformation monitoring into broader structural health monitoring programs
    • Understand legal, safety, and ethical implications in deformation survey reporting.
