Topic outline

  • Modern Materials: Smart Fluids

    Credits: 4 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course provides a comprehensive overview of smart fluids, materials that change their rheological properties in response to external stimuli such as magnetic fields, electric fields, or temperature changes.

Professional engineers will explore the fundamental physical principles behind magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids, investigate their design and integration challenges, and evaluate real-world applications across automotive, aerospace, robotics, and civil infrastructure. The course blends theoretical insights with practical considerations, including system modeling, control integration, and durability testing.

    Topics:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Define and distinguish the different categories of smart fluids and their operating principles.
    • Analyze the field-responsive behavior of magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids.
    • Evaluate smart fluid applications in mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering contexts.
    • Understand the material formulation and suspension dynamics of smart fluids.
    • Assess design integration issues, including thermal effects, power demands, and maintenance.
    • Model and simulate smart fluid systems using relevant fluid mechanics and control theories.
    • Interpret emerging trends in smart fluid research and commercialization pathways.
