    PDH Course Description:

    This course provides a comprehensive examination of engineered horticulture, the field that merges horticultural science with engineering principles to design, develop, and
    manage systems that support plant production, landscaping, and controlled environment agriculture. The course explores greenhouse technology, irrigation engineering, soil and substrate design, automation, postharvest systems, and urban horticulture infrastructure. It is designed to give licensed professional engineers a structured understanding of how engineering principles enhance horticultural practices to meet the needs of food security, sustainability, and landscape management in both rural and urban environments.

    At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
    • Define engineered horticulture and explain its relationship to agricultural engineering, landscape engineering, and controlled environment agriculture.
    • Describe the engineering systems required to support horticultural production, including water management, energy systems, and structural design. 
    • Evaluate greenhouse and controlled environment designs that optimize plant growth through engineered climate and resource control.
    • Discuss mechanization, automation, and sensor-based technologies that are transforming horticultural production and management.
    • Explain the design of sustainable landscape systems, including urban green infrastructure, vertical gardens, and erosion control measures.
    • Analyze postharvest engineering methods that ensure product quality, reduce waste, and improve efficiency in horticultural supply chains.
