  • Recent Technological Advances in Computer Chip Fabrication

    Credits: 2 PDH

    PDH Course Description:

This course provides a comprehensive, beginner-accessible exploration of the latest developments in computer chip manufacturing. Covering breakthroughs from the smallest transistor designs to complex multi-chip packaging techniques, the course introduces students to both practical tools used in today’s chip factories and experimental technologies still in development. Designed for engineers from all disciplines, this course explains the science, manufacturing methods, and engineering strategies behind modern chip fabrication—also known as semiconductor processing.

Topics include: extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, 3D chip stacking, chiplet integration, new materials like graphene, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing process control. Special attention is given to the environmental impact and energy demands of advanced fabrication methods. No prior experience in semiconductor engineering is required.

    Onjectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
    • Understand how modern chips are made using nanoscale fabrication techniques
    • Describe the role and function of key fabrication tools like photolithography machines
    • Identify major advances in chip technology including 3D stacking and chiplet architectures
    • Explain the impact of emerging materials such as graphene and high-k dielectrics
    • Recognize the challenges and solutions in advanced process nodes (e.g., 5nm and below)
    • Discuss the integration of photonics, AI, and quantum computing in chip design
