Introduction to Solar Power Towers
Credits: 2 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Solar power tower concentrating solar power systems convert the thermal energy in solar radiation to mechanical energy and then to electrical energy in much the same way that conventional power plants convert thermal energy from combustion of a fossil fuel to electricity. They use an array of two axis tracking flat mirrors, called heliostats to concentrate incoming direct normal insolation to a receiver at the top of a tall tower, and ultimately generate high pressure steam and generate electricity. This technology has been demonstrated with the 10 MW Solar One and Solar Two plants near Barstow, CA.Topics:
- general configuration
- components of a solar power tower
- hybridization capabilities
- benefits
- impacts
- siting requirements
