Concrete Materials and Mix Design for Highway Infrastructure
Credits: 8 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Concrete is one of the most versatile and widely used construction materials. It is composed of hydraulic cement, fine and coarse aggregates, water, and sometimes admixtures. Concrete is used extensively in highway construction for pavements, bridges, tunnels, culverts, and other structures.
This course covers the materials, proportioning, and verification of concrete for highway applications. It examines how to specify cement and admixtures for durability in harsh environments, understand mix design procedures for strength and performance, evaluate material certifications, and verify fresh concrete properties on site. The course draws from the Federal Lands Highway Field Materials Manual and is part of a series on highway materials acceptance and testing.Topics:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Specify hydraulic cement types and mineral/chemical admixtures for concrete durability
- Design concrete mixes for strength and durability using ACI procedures
- Understand exposure categories (freeze-thaw, sulfates, corrosion) and their material requirements
- Evaluate concrete material certifications and perform acceptance testing
- Verify fresh concrete properties before placement (slump, air content, temperature, unit weight)
