The 1972 legislation known as the Clean Water Act set secondary treatment as the required level of treatment to be provided by domestic wastewater treatment plants in the United States. In this course you can learn about
the basic processes used in primary and secondary wastewater treatment, processes used and contaminants removed by advanced treatment, treatment & disposal or beneficial reuse of biosolids (wastewater sludge), and the fundamentals of onsite wastewater
treatment systems.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
Be familiar with the wastewater treatment requirements set by the Clean Water Act and subsequent related legislation.
Know the types of pollutants typically present in domestic wastewater.
Know the processes used in preliminary and primary wastewater treatment.
Know the process alternatives for secondary wastewater treatment.
Know the alternative methods for land treatment of wastewater.
Be familiar with the disinfection processes used for wastewater.
Know the pollutants typically removed by advanced treatment and the processes used for their removal.
Know the general treatment processes and disposal & beneficial reuse methods for wastewater biosolids.
Know the alternative processes for onsite wastewater treatment.

The EPA document EPA 832-R-04-001 (Primer for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Systems, September 2004) remains a baseline reference but has not been formally reissued under the same document number with a direct “updated” version. EPA still references the original 2004 publication as the primer for basic wastewater treatment information.
However, although there is no direct revision bearing the same title/number, EPA and related programs have released other, more recent wastewater-related guidance documents that cover advanced topics and updated technology/practice considerations:
Municipal Nutrient Removal Technologies (Volumes I & II), EPA 832-R-08-006 (2008), which provides expanded treatment technology details beyond the original primer. EPA
Nutrient Control Design Manual (600-R-10-100, 2010) and related reports, offering design and technology updates for nutrient removal. EPA
These later publications don’t replace the 2004 Primer per se, but they reflect advances in wastewater treatment practices and technologies since 2004. You can use them alongside or instead of the original Primer depending on how current and detailed you need the technical guidance to be.
