  • Modern Materials: Hyperelastic Materials and Advanced Elastomer Systems

    PDH Course Description:

    Hyperelastic and advanced elastomer materials are critical in seals, mounts, biomedical devices, and soft robotic systems. Their unique ability to undergo large, reversible deformations requires specialized modeling and design approaches. 

    This course introduces the fundamentals of hyperelasticity, key constitutive models, testing methods, and material families. It also covers durability, environmental effects, and the use of finite element analysis (FEA) for practical applications.

    Topics:

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the principles of hyperelasticity and strain energy functions.
    • Apply and compare common hyperelastic models such as Neo-Hookean, Mooney–Rivlin, Ogden, and Gent.
    • Interpret test data and calibrate material models.
    • Assess elastomer families for performance, durability, and compatibility.
    • Implement hyperelastic models in FEA and validate against experimental data.
