Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Materials: Perovskites and Beyond
Credits: 2 PDH
PDH Course Description:
Hybrid organic–inorganic materials represent one of the most dynamic areas in modern engineering materials research and practice. These systems combine the chemical versatility of organic compounds with the structural stability and functionality of inorganic frameworks, producing unique properties that extend well beyond traditional composites. From flexible thermoelectric devices and energy-harvesting systems to biomedical scaffolds and protective coatings, these materials are enabling breakthroughs across multiple engineering sectors. This course introduces professional engineers to the foundational principles, classification schemes, synthesis methods, and characterization techniques that define hybrid materials. It emphasizes structure–property relationships, interface engineering, and nanoscale integration as the critical drivers of performance. Special focus is given to applications in energy systems, flexible electronics, environmental technologies, and manufacturing innovation.
Topics:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define hybrid organic–inorganic materials and distinguish them from conventional composites.
- Explain the classifications of hybrids, including Class I vs. Class II systems, MOFs, COFs, nanocomposites, and layered architectures.
- Describe major synthesis techniques, such as sol–gel processing, interpenetrating polymer networks, and nanobuilding-block self-assembly.
- Understand characterization methods to evaluate hybrid materials.
- Analyze structure–property relationships, particularly with respect to mechanical, thermal, electronic, and optical performance.
- Assess the suitability of hybrid materials for engineering applications in thermoelectrics, printed electronics, biomedical devices, coatings, and additive manufacturing.
- Identify current challenges, sustainability concerns, and research frontiers driving innovation in hybrid materials.
