    PDH Course Description:

    This course examines the professional obligations of licensed engineers to protect public health, safety, and welfare through competent engineering judgment, responsible charge, ethical decision-making, and accountable professional practice.

    Professional Engineers function as guardians of public trust across the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and oversight of engineered systems and infrastructure. This course explores engineering judgment under uncertainty, the responsible charge doctrine, public protection obligations, risk evaluation, professional competence, ethical communication, conflicts of interest, construction oversight, systems reliability, and the long-term societal consequences of engineering decisions. The course also examines how engineering failures often trace their roots not to isolated technical errors, but to breakdowns in professional judgment, organizational culture, and ethical communication.

    Topics:

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Identify the professional responsibilities associated with engineering judgment and public protection under established ethics codes and licensure law
    • Understand the doctrine of responsible charge and its relationship to engineering accountability, seal use, and professional oversight
    • Be familiar with the ethical and professional conflicts involving employers, clients, regulators, contractors, and public stakeholders
    • Recognize the importance of practicing within established areas of competence and maintaining professional proficiency through lifelong learning
    • Learn how to apply engineering judgment to uncertainty, risk, and systems reliability when codes and standards do not provide explicit answers
    • Recognize organizational and cultural conditions that compromise sound engineering practice and evaluate strategies to address them
    • Understand the emerging professional responsibilities associated with automation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and interconnected infrastructure
