Wind damage to a home often begins with the failure of a seemingly small component—a roof covering, garage door, window, soffit, connector, or sheathing attachment—and can rapidly progress into major envelope and structural damage when wind pressures are no longer transferred through a reliable load path. Improving residential wind resilience therefore requires more than simply increasing member strength; it requires coordinated protection of the building envelope, openings, connections, and load path from the roof to the foundation.
This course provides practical guidance for improving the windstorm and tornado resilience of wood-framed one- and two-family residential buildings, with particular emphasis on damage mechanisms commonly associated with lower-intensity tornadoes and other severe wind events, applicable to both new construction and retrofit. It focuses on three interrelated areas: the building envelope, opening protection, and the continuous load path—covering practical improvements to roofing, sheathing, wall coverings, windows, doors, garage doors, and soffits, with attention to product wind ratings, correct installation, and reducing internal pressurization following the failure of openings.
The structural portion follows wind forces through the building from roof sheathing and framing to walls and foundation, examining roof-to-wall connectors, sill-plate anchorage, shear-wall hold-downs, structural wall sheathing, and gable-end bracing to avoid weak links in the load path. Recommendations are coordinated with the IRC, ASCE 7, FEMA guidance, the WFCM, ICC 600, and IBHS FORTIFIED Home guidance, and the course clearly distinguishes improved building resilience from tornado life-safety protection, which is addressed separately by ICC 500 and FEMA P-361.
By completing this course, participants will be better prepared to identify common wind-related vulnerabilities in one- and two-family residential buildings, evaluate envelope and opening-protection improvements, review critical connection details, trace and strengthen the continuous wind load path, and select practical new-construction or retrofit measures that can reduce damage during tornadoes and other severe windstorms.Topics:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale and relate lower-intensity tornado wind effects to common residential building damage patterns.
- Evaluate how building-envelope failure, opening failure, internal pressurization, and discontinuities in the structural load path can contribute to progressive wind damage, and compare minimum code-based wind provisions with enhanced resilience measures.
- Select and review wind-resistance improvements for asphalt-shingle roofing, roof coverings, sealed roof decks, roof sheathing, and rooftop solar-panel attachment systems.
- Assess exterior wall coverings, including vinyl and fiber-cement siding, for wind resistance, fastening, and installation vulnerabilities.
- Evaluate opening-protection strategies for windows and doors and explain how opening failure can increase internal pressure and subsequent roof and wall demands.
- Review garage-door wind-pressure resistance, installation, and attachment considerations, and identify soffit vulnerabilities and measures to reduce attic pressurization and water intrusion.
- Trace and evaluate a continuous wind load path from roof sheathing through roof framing, roof-to-wall connections, wall systems, floor-to-floor connections, and the foundation.
- Review roof-to-wall connectors, sill-plate anchorage, shear-wall hold-downs, wall sheathing, and other critical connections for adequate uplift and lateral-force transfer.
- Identify common gable-end wall vulnerabilities and evaluate bracing and connection improvements for high-wind resistance.
- Apply FEMA, IRC, ASCE 7, WFCM, ICC 600, IBHS FORTIFIED Home, and applicable product-standard guidance within the specific scope and limitations presented in the course.
