By following a structured timeline from the present to centuries ahead, engineers can anticipate, plan, and design infrastructure to meet the challenges of rising seas.

    Topics:

    Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Explain the mechanisms driving sea-level rise, including thermal expansion, glacial melt, and ice sheet instability.
    • Describe the progression of sea-level rise impacts by near-term (to 2030), mid-term (to 2050), long-term (to 2100), and far-future (post-2100) horizons.
    • Evaluate appropriate engineering, planning, and ecological adaptation measures for each time horizon.
    • Assess risks to infrastructure, water resources, and population centers under various rise scenarios.
    • Explore strategies of protection, accommodation, and managed retreat in engineering practice.
