Do not confuse professions: The Board’s current renewal guidance requires architects to attest to specified health, safety, and welfare continuing education. That architect requirement does not establish a CE requirement for professional engineers.
License Renewal
Renew by April 30 in each even-numbered year
All Hawaii engineer licenses, regardless of their original issue date, are subject to renewal by April 30 of every even-numbered year. A license not renewed by its expiration date is no longer valid for practice.
Expired or forfeited license
A forfeited PE license may generally be restored within two years after expiration, subject to the current restoration requirements and fees. After that period, the individual must apply as a new applicant and satisfy the requirements then in effect.
Practice restriction: An engineer may not practice professional engineering in Hawaii without a current, valid Hawaii license.
Voluntary Professional Development
Continuing education can still support competent practice
The absence of a state-mandated PDH total does not eliminate an engineer’s responsibility to practice competently and within areas of qualification. Voluntary education can help an engineer stay current with codes, standards, technology, risk-management practices, and professional responsibilities.
Employers, clients, professional certifications, federal contracts, or project-specific programs may also impose training expectations independent of Hawaii license renewal.
Multi-State Licensure
Another jurisdiction may still require PDH
A PE holding licenses in Hawaii and another state or territory must independently satisfy each jurisdiction’s rules. Hawaii’s lack of mandatory PE continuing education does not exempt the licensee from education required by another licensing board.
