Rhode Island Professional Engineer Renewal
Rhode Island currently does not require continuing education or professional development hours to renew an individual Professional Engineer registration.
No PDH or continuing-education hours are currently required for individual Rhode Island PE renewal. Individual registrations renew biennially by June 30 of odd-numbered years. Engineers licensed elsewhere must still satisfy every other jurisdiction’s education requirements.

Professional Competence
The absence of a renewal-hour requirement does not eliminate an engineer’s responsibility to practice competently, remain current with applicable standards, and protect public health, safety, and welfare.
Engineers Licensed in Multiple States
A PE holding licenses in other jurisdictions must independently satisfy each jurisdiction’s subject, delivery, provider, assessment, timing, and recordkeeping rules. Rhode Island’s lack of mandatory education does not waive another board’s requirements.
Before selecting a course, verify the rules of every license being renewed. A course taken voluntarily for Rhode Island may also qualify elsewhere, but acceptance and credit value are controlled by the other licensing board.
Registration Renewal
Registrants must maintain accurate online account information and submit the complete renewal application and required fee by the June 30 odd-year expiration date. An expired registration does not authorize engineering practice.
An entity practicing or offering engineering services in Rhode Island must hold a current Certificate of Authorization in addition to the responsible engineer’s individual registration. Firm COAs follow a separate renewal schedule.
Reinstatement requires Board approval and applicable fees and penalties. The Board may request information concerning engineering activities during the lapsed period.
An active registrant in good standing who is at least 65 and no longer practices may request retirement status. A retired registrant may not practice, offer services, or sign and seal engineering documents.
