Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Requirements

 Alabama - Continuing Educational Requirements:
Hours Required:
  • 15 hours annually (1 PDH unit = 1 CPC unit = 1 CPD unit)
  • 30 hours (if biennially)

Board Approved Courses or Providers?
The Alabama board does not pre-approve course providers or specific courses. Each engineering licensee must determine whether a course satisfies their state board’s CPC requirements.
Approved Subject Matter:
  • Technical, ethical, or managerial content relevant to a licensee's particular area of engineering practice.
  • For meeting the continuing professional competency
    requirements through correspondence, video, audio, or on-line courses, the course must require the participant to show evidence of achievement and completion.
Are Online Courses Allowed? Online, web-based courses are specifically listed as an approved activity, with no limit on the amount of hours received through online continuing education.

PDH Carryover:

 		15 PDH (max) may be carried forward into the next renewal period.
Other Specific Requirements:
  1. Unaccepted CPC Activity: The board specifically states that the demonstration of equipment is not an acceptable activity for PDH credit.
  2. A licensed professional engineer or licensed professional
    land surveyor must earn a minimum of fifteen PDH per annual
    renewal period or thirty if biennial renewal period except for the
    carryover permitted. The number of professional development
    hours which may be carried forward into the next renewal period
    shall not exceed fifteen whether on an annual or biennial period.
  3. Recordkeeping for Audit Purposes: PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 4 years for audit purposes.
  4.  Random CPC Audits - The Board will conduct a random audit of renewals submitted  for  compliance  with  the  continuing  education  
    requirements.  Those licensees selected for audit will be notified and will be required to provide the documents as outlined in Rule 330-X-13-.02. Failure to respond within 60 days of audit notification will
    result in a temporary suspension of the license and the license
    will remain suspended until such time as the audit requirements
    are met. Falsification of documentation is grounds for disciplinary
    action.
