Subject Louisiana - Continuing Educational Requirements:
Hours Required:
30 PDH hours biennially
(1 PDH unit = 1 CPC unit = 1 CPD unit)

Renewal Dates:
March 31 and September 30 based on year of initial licensure

Board Approved Course Providers? (Effective November 2015), the Louisiana board will no longer pre-approve course providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether a course satisfies their state board’s CPC requirements.
Approved Subject Matter
  • Courses shall have “subject matter which is technical in nature or addresses business management practices, professional ethics, quality assurance, codes or other similar topics which facilitate the registrant’s professional development as a professional engineer
  • Courses which promote the safeguarding of life, health, property and public welfare.
  • A minimum 1 PDH of the 30 PDH required must be earned in professional engineering ethics.
  • For engineers who design buildings and/or building systems, a minimum of 8 PDH shall be earned in Life Safety Code, Building Codes, and/or Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.
Are Online Courses Allowed? Online, web-based courses are specifically listed as an approved activity, with no limit on the amount of hours received through online continuing education.
PDH Carryover:
7 PDH (max)
may be carried forward into the next renewal period. (However, in categories which are required, for example - ethics, the number of PDH carried over in that particular category may not exceed the minimum number of PDH required for that category).

Other Specific Requirements:
  1. Dual licensees: (those who are both a PE and a PLS) must obtain 30 PDHs during each biennial licensure renewal period; however, at least 10 of the PDHs must be in engineering-related activities with at least 10 of the PDHs must be in land surveying-related activities. Of the required 30 PDHs (a) at least 1 PDH must be in professional ethics; (b) a minimum of 8 PDHs must be earned in Life Safety Code, Building Codes and/or Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines by every professional engineer who designs buildings and/or building systems; and (c) a minimum of 2 PDHs must be earned in the Standards of Practice Boundary Surveys in Louisiana.
  2. Recordkeeping for Audit Purposes: PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 6 years for audit purposes. (See our Audit-Assist Guarantee!)
