North Carolina - Continuing Educational Requirements:
Hours Required: 15 hours annually (1 PDH unit = 1 CPC unit = 1 CPD unit)

Board Approved Courses or Providers?
The Board does not pre-approve specific courses, but does pre-approve course sponsors! Courses provided by an approved sponsor are assured to be accepted by the Board if the course meets the board guidelines for acceptable subject matter.

Approved Subject Matter:
Acceptable subject matter:
  • Course or activity is taken through an approved course sponsor.
  • Licensee can substantiate that the course has maintained, improved, or expanded their engineering skills and knowledge relevant to their particular field of practice.
  • Course enhances the licensee’s ability to provide engineering services in a competent manner
  • Course aids the licensee in better protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
  • Subject matter of the course is related to the licensee’s particular discipline of engineering practice.
  • Course is designed for engineers and is of a technical nature.
  • Computer-based engineering courses may be acceptable if of an advanced nature; such as a program for hydrologic or structural analysis. Basic computer skills courses are not allowed.
Are Online Courses Allowed? Online, web-based courses are specifically listed as an approved activity, with no limit on the amount of hours received through online continuing education.

PDH Carryover:

15 PDH (max)
may be carried forward into the next renewal period.
Other Specific Requirements:

  1. General and basic computer courses are not acceptable as continuing educational courseware, such as basic computer skills or basic software skills that do not have a specific engineering application.
  2. Recordkeeping for Audit Purposes: PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 3 years for audit purposes. (See our Audit-Assist Guarantee!)
