Indiana Professional Engineer Renewal
Indiana professional engineers complete 30 continuing-education hours during each biennial renewal period, including one hour of engineering ethics and one hour covering Indiana engineering statutes and rules.
Complete 30 CE hours per biennium: at least 1 hour of ethics applicable to professional engineering, at least 1 hour on Indiana engineering statutes and rules, and 28 additional qualifying hours. Up to 15 excess hours may carry into the next biennium.

Course and Provider Approval
Indiana defines qualifying continuing education as instruction approved by an organization recognized under IC 25-1-4-0.2 or by the Board and designed to directly enhance professional engineering knowledge and skill.
Distance Education
Indiana expressly provides that courses obtained through distance-learning methods qualify. The PE rule does not establish a separate numerical cap on qualifying online hours, but the course must still be approved through an acceptable organization or by the Board and must enhance engineering practice.
The completion record should show the participant, provider, course, date, hours, and successful completion. A structured Moodle course with learning material, assessment, and a certificate is easier to document than informal personal study.
Reduced Requirements and Waivers
A PE initially licensed in Indiana during the first year of the biennium must complete 15 continuing-education hours for the first renewal.
A PE initially licensed during the second year of the biennium has no CE requirement for that first renewal.
No CE is required to renew an inactive registration, but an inactive PE may not practice engineering. Reactivation requires proof of 30 qualifying hours completed during the preceding two years.
The Board may consider a written request to waive all or part of the requirement for qualifying military service, incapacitating illness or injury, or another recognized hardship.
Reporting and Audit
The renewal application requires verification that the continuing-education requirement will be met by renewal. The professional engineer must retain copies of completion certificates for three years after the end of the biennium.
Indiana conducts random post-renewal audits. State law generally calls for auditing more than 1% but fewer than 10% of practitioners subject to CE. Selected engineers must provide the requested proof, and noncompliance is handled under IC 25-1-4.
